What is NPDES?
The NPDES Permit Program addresses water quality by regulating point and non-point sources that discharge regulated substances into waters of the United States. Created in 1972 by the Clean Water Act, the NPDES permit program is authorized to state governments by EPA to perform many permitting, administrative, and enforcement aspects of the program. The three significant categories of NPDES permit holders in this region include: 1) Municipal Wastewater; 2) Industrial Wastewater; and 3) Stormwater.
Most NPDES permit holders are your local water reclamation (wastewater) facilities. Water reclamation is a vital community service for residents and businesses sending wastewater through the sewer system to be cleaned. Water reclamation facilities are spending millions of dollars on new technologies to remove contaminants, that are flushed or washed down everyone’s sink and shower drains.
Industrial wastewater that is generated as a result of the manufacturing process is also considered a point-source discharge.

You can do your part. Flush only toilet paper and human waste. Prevent medicines, oils, solvents and harmful chemicals from being washed down household drains and storm drains.
